Although Norse gods were worshipped over a thousand years ago, they continue to thrive in contemporary fiction. Thor is one of the main characters in the Marvel universe, in both comic books and films (Thor in 2011, Thor: The Dark World in 2013, Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, amongst others). The Norse gods also make an appearance in the universe of Percy Jackson, most notably in the trilogy Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard (Rick Riordan, 2015 – 2017). Some of them are also part of the “Old Gods” in American Gods (Neil Gaiman, 2001; Starz, 2017 – 2021).

This course will explore how fiction incorporates these ancient gods into modern society.
